A Chiang Mai mall day: northern food, films and family time

A mall visit in Chiang Mai can mean lunch from established northern food stalls, a film in an IMAX auditorium, a children's play session or an afternoon browsing Thai design. Choose the activity first: Central Chiangmai Airport brings regional food and family entertainment together, Central Chiangmai offers IMAX and 4DX screenings, and MAYA fits naturally into an outing around Nimmanhaemin Road.

Put the right mall on your map

The two Central centres are separate destinations. Central Chiangmai, also widely called Central Festival, stands on the northeastern side of the city at 99, 99/1 and 99/2 Moo 4, Superhighway Road, Fa Ham. Its shopping hours are Monday–Friday, 11am–9pm, and Saturday–Sunday, 10am–10pm.

Central Chiangmai Airport, also called Central Airport Plaza, is southwest of the Old City at 2 Mahidol Road, near the Wua Lai Road junction. It opens Monday–Friday, 11am–9pm, and weekends and public holidays, 10am–9pm. Use the full branch name when booking a car.

MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Center occupies the Rin Kham intersection at the northern end of Nimmanhaemin Road, where it meets Huay Kaew Road. The address is 55 Moo 5, Chang Phuak; shopping hours are 10am–10pm daily. For an afternoon that combines a mall with smaller shops and places to eat, this is the most convenient of the three.

Entry to these shopping centres is free. Films, play areas and purchases have their own charges. Allow around two hours for lunch and browsing, or a half-day when adding a film or a three-hour children's activity.

Start with northern food at Central Airport

Kad Luang Airport, on the ground floor of Central Chiangmai Airport, gathers local food businesses into an indoor market setting. Its renewed food zone opened in 2025, with names including Khao Soi Lamduan Faham and Huen Phen. It suits a group whose members want to choose different dishes while staying within the same shopping centre.

For a first northern meal, khao soi is a useful starting point: noodles in a rich coconut-based broth, commonly served with chicken or beef. Sai ua is a sausage seasoned with herbs and curry paste. Nam phrik num is a green-chilli dip eaten with vegetables or crisp pork rind, while kaeng hang le is a spiced pork curry. Northern meals commonly revolve around sticky rice, and the region's herbs, vegetables and chilli preparations give them a distinctive character.

The market atmosphere has a history of its own. Kad Luang Airport opened in 2003, followed by a food-and-gift area in 2006. Bamboo forms, lanterns and northern banners helped translate the visual language of a local market into a modern retail interior. This was part of a wider revival and commercial presentation of Lanna identity, connecting residents' regional attachment with visitors' interest in northern culture. The setting is a contemporary expression of that identity, with regional food businesses at its centre.

For a food-led outing, begin here at lunchtime, then continue to shopping or an upstairs activity. Keeping the meal and activity in one building is especially useful when travelling with young children.

Choose a cinema by the experience

Major Cineplex at Central Chiangmai is on the fifth floor. Its options include IMAX with Laser, 4DX and a VIP auditorium with reclining seats. IMAX suits visitors who want a large-screen presentation; 4DX adds motion and physical effects, so it is a different experience from a conventional screening. The branch's Kids Cinema has a slide and ball pit, with a brighter auditorium and lower sound levels than a standard screening; it operates on weekends and public holidays.

The Major Cineplex branch page leads to film and session selection. Select the date, soundtrack and subtitle language, screening format and seat category to see the available session and its price. Cinema hours are 10:30am–10pm.

For a film after lunch at Kad Luang, Major Cineplex is on Central Chiangmai Airport's fourth floor. It offers conventional digital screenings and 3D, with normal and paired “Honeymoon” seating categories. The cinema opens 11am–11pm on weekdays and 10am–11:30pm at weekends, later than the main shopping floors.

MAYA's SFX Cinema is on the fifth floor, directly above the fourth-floor restaurant level. That arrangement works well for an evening meal and film in the Nimman area.

A substantial indoor play session

HarborLand occupies the fourth floor of Central Chiangmai Airport. Its play areas include slides, interactive games and a role-play town, with facilities aimed at children from five months to 15 years. It opens Monday–Friday, 11am–8pm, and weekends and public holidays, 10am–9pm.

A three-hour session costs 290 baht for children 65–80cm tall, 470 baht from 81cm, and 190 baht for an accompanying adult aged 18 or over. A child in the 470-baht category and one adult therefore cost 660 baht before socks or other extras. Socks cost 60 baht a pair; overtime is 50 baht per half-hour. Babies under 65cm or under six months enter free. Seniors aged 60 or over, pregnant visitors and wheelchair users have free-entry categories when accompanying at least one paid admission, limited to one person in each category on the same receipt.

The HarborLand branch page provides ticket access. Plan the play session around its own closing time, particularly on weekdays when it closes an hour before the mall.

Make shopping specific

For clothing and gifts at Central Chiangmai, useful names include Uniqlo for everyday clothing, Jaspal for fashion, Jim Thompson for Thai silk fashion and Lanna Souvenir for regional gifts.

At MAYA, the ground floor has Thai lifestyle and fashion names such as HARNN, NaRaYa and Gentlewoman. The second floor includes Levi's, Skechers and Watsons; the third brings together electronics and communications shops, including Banana, Big Camera, Samsung, AIS and True. Asia Books is also on the third floor.

For food supplies, Rimping Supermarket is in MAYA's B1 basement and opens 10am–10pm. Tops at Central Chiangmai Airport opens 11am–9pm. The supermarket hours are worth using when planning a grocery stop, even on days when other parts of the mall open earlier.

Take the MAYA outing into Nimman

MAYA's design treats the building as a vertical extension of the surrounding neighbourhood, stacking shopping, eating and entertainment. Its curved exterior draws on Thai craft forms, while the Nimman Hill rooftop gives the building a connection with the surrounding city and mountain views. That combination connects the mall with Nimman’s mix of shops, cafés and leisure spaces.

For lunch, the fourth floor has MAYA Kitchen and restaurants including Hachiban Ramen, Yayoi and The Duke's. The B1 level has take-home food and snacks alongside the supermarket.

One Nimman is a nearby continuation at 1 Nimmanhaemin Road. Its One Market brings northern dishes and international food into a shared eating area. On the second floor, One Nimman Select gathers Thai designers, local brands and art-and-craft gifts. The complex opens 11am–9pm, with its night zone running to 10pm. Allow another hour or two here if food and design are the main purpose of your afternoon.

A workable sequence is lunch at MAYA, shopping for the items you need, then One Nimman in the late afternoon. Alternatively, reverse the order and finish with a film at MAYA. Keeping the outing within this neighbourhood avoids spending the afternoon transferring between widely separated malls.

Transport and facilities that affect the day

A car booked through a ride-hailing app, taxi or red songthaew can take you to the main malls. Red songthaews are the shared red pickup vehicles seen around Chiang Mai; agree the destination and fare before boarding. For an app booking, select the exact centre and use the pickup point shown for your return journey. Central Chiangmai also has a taxi stand.

Both Central Chiangmai and Central Chiangmai Airport provide wheelchairs, strollers, baby-changing and breastfeeding facilities, prayer rooms, first-aid services, Wi-Fi and luggage storage. Their published parking allowance is two hours free. A meal followed by a film or HarborLand session can easily run beyond that allowance, so include parking in the cost of a longer visit.

For a visit before a flight, Central Chiangmai Airport is the logical branch geographically. Leave time for a separate road transfer to the terminal as well as your airline's check-in requirement. Its luggage-storage service can be useful while shopping; keep the flight departure time as the fixed point of the outing.
